Brian* and Lee* had started drinking alcohol at a time that I considered to be too early. I refrained from drinking, and I was embarrassed by their drunken carousing on the underground trains. We arrived at a nightclub, and I thought that this was an appropriate time to start drinking. Lee and Brian, however, were at a level of drunkenness that they were satisfied with, and they didn't join me. I insisted that they drink with me, but Brian said that I had no right to tell my friends how they should should behave on a night out. Lee told me that I was no more important than anybody else.
After a couple of pints, I stood near the dancefloor in order to watch the revellers. A girl smiled at me, and she accepted my offer of a drink. We made small talk for less than a minute before one of her friends dragged her away. I was under the impression that she was obliged to speak to me for the duration of the time that she was consuming the drink that I had bought her. I protested to her friend, who looked at me with a facial expression which suggested I was capable of harm. I retired to the bar, where a girl asked me whether I found her attractive or not. I studied her features and replied that I did not find her ugly, and that I would be grateful of somebody to talk to. She seemed offended by my response, and left.
